(GIST): Woman Delivers A ‘Stone Baby’ After 60 Year Pregnancy(PHOTO)

In a bizarre turn of events straight out of Mr. Ripley’s personal files, comes this true story of a 92-year-old woman who delivered a child (albeit not a live baby) she had been carrying for over half a century.

Huang Yijun, aged 92, is from southern China and she recently made news after delivering a baby known as a lithopedion, aka ‘Stone Baby’.

Huang Yijun told the press she didn’t have the money to have her fetus removed after doctors told her it had died inside her in 1948.

So she simply did nothing at all about it.

Lithopedion is a very rare medical phenomenon, which occurs when a pregnancy fails and the fetus actually calcifies while still in the mother’s body.

Medically speaking, what often happens is the implanted fetus gets to an advanced stage before it dies. Too large to be absorbed by the body, the remains of the child or its surrounding amniotic sac slowly calcify, turning to stone as a way to protect the woman’s body from infection from the decomposing tissue.

If no complications occur, believe it or not, the mother can basically just go on with her life.

According to the Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine, only 290 cases of lithopedions have ever been documented by medical literature.

Two-headed’ baby delivered in Katsina

A baby born with abnormal head

A baby girl with what appears to be two heads has been delivered  of a woman at the General Hospital, Malumfashi, Katsina State.

The baby also has a cleft palate and stunted fingers.

The News Agency of Nigeria reported one 19-year-old Zainabu Dahiru gave birth to the baby, which also had no eyes,  on Sunday.

The baby’s father, Malam Dahiru Umar, told NAN on Tuesday that the baby was born through normal delivery.

Umar, a 25-year-old petty trader, said the baby was their first and his wife attended regular ante-natal care during pregnancy.

He said he cried on sighting the baby and sympathetic hospital workers told him that they could not offer any medical assistance beside the delivery.

He said the workers informed him that his wife was in a stable condition and referred the baby to Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital, Shika, near, Zaria.

Umar appealed to government, wealthy individuals and non-governmental organisations for support.
Meanwhile, effort to speak with Medical Director of the General Hospital failed.

However, a paediatrician, Dr Ahmad Bala, who spoke to NAN, said the baby needed maximum medical examination to ascertain the nature of the abnormalities.

Bala said the medical examination would include physical checks, X-ray and other diagnoses that would equip a physician to speak properly on the matter at hand and possible remedies.

NAN reported that the new born baby and her mother were still at home.

When shown the photograph of the baby, a gynaecologist at the Garki Hospital, Abuja, Dr Kayode Obende, said the condition was called encephacele.

Fully recovered from acute morning sickness that showed the first signs of her pregnancy, Kate Middleton stepped out on Wednesday, Jan 30 to the Boots store in West London. She was spotted wearing a scarf, black leggins and boots and attempting to conceal her growing belly with a tartan shawl. Her photo also showed she had added weight evident from her fuller face.
The Duchess is said to be due in July and has kept herself busy with meetings with charities and planning future engagements before she puts to bed. She’s also been doing a lot of shopping lately. She was spotted shopping for yoga leggings at Selfridge’s  London. She’s also stocked up on maternity clothes, picking up items at JoJo Maman Bebe, a London boutique, and ordering goodies from Asos Maternity Line.
