A Staten Island teenager has died after throwing herself in front of a train while nearly 200 students watched.
Felicia Garcia, 15, jumped as the train arrived at the Huguenot station about 3:10 p.m., witnesses recounted.
A witnessed said Garcia of Tottenville High School had been visibly anxious moments before the fatal leap.
“She didn’t seem herself. She was really off,” said a 15-year-old friend of Felicia’s who asked that her name not be used. “She asked me what time it was every two minutes. She was pacing back and forth, eager for the train to come.”
Reports claim that Garcia’s last tweet on Twitter, posted Monday, alluded to her distressed state of mind.
It read:
“I cant, im done, I give up,” the teen wrote.
Her friend said she had overheard Garcia talking about being bullied Saturday at a football game.
“I was in her lunch period on Wednesday. She was talking (to another friend). She’s like, ‘I can’t do this anymore. I can’t handle it anymore.’ She was telling her friend the football players have been harassing her,” her friend said.
Also on Wednesday, a teacher approached Garcia on the train platform and asked why she hadn’t been in class that day.
“Are you okay?” the teacher asked, according to the friend and Garcia said she was.
Soon after that exchange, the train approached.
“I said, ‘Finally,’ ” the friend recalled.
“Yeah, finally,” replied Garcia.
“She then looked back at us. Then she dropped her bag and she jumped,” the friend said.
Garcia was taken to Staten Island University Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
